Cardboard

What is Cardboard?

Cardboard is a generic term used to describe a heavy-duty paper-pulp-based material often used in packaging, printing, and various other applications. It is known for its versatility, strength, and cost-effectiveness. There are different types and grades of cardboard, each serving specific purposes.

Specifications:

Cardboard specifications can vary based on the type and intended use. Cardboard is typically made from paper pulp. Cardboard thickness is measured in points or millimeters, indicating the thickness of the material. The weight of cardboard is often measured in grams per square meter (gsm) or pounds (lbs). Cardboard comes in various colors, like single to full-colour CMYK and PMS. Some types of cardboard may have coatings to enhance their appearance or provide additional protection. For example, white cardboard may have a coating for a smooth finish. For corrugated cardboard, the specifications may include the type of corrugation (single-wall, double-wall) and the flute size. Cardboard sheets or rolls come in various dimensions. The size and shape depend on the intended application, such as packaging boxes, displays, or printed materials. Cardboard’s printability is essential for packaging and printed materials and its compatibility with printing methods, such as embossing, debossing, texture printing, silver or gold foiling, and spot UV.

Key features and types of cardboard:

There are different types of cardboard and each has its own specific features. Corrugated Cardboard is the most common type of cardboard used for packaging. It consists of three layers. Paperboard or Chipboard is a thicker and more rigid form, often used for items like cereal boxes, shoeboxes, and some types of product packaging. Folding cartons are made from paperboard and are commonly used for packaging products like cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and food items. They are designed to be folded into a box shape. White cardboard is a type of paperboard with a white, smooth surface. It is often used for premium packaging where a clean and polished appearance is desired. Kraft cardboard is made from unbleached pulp, giving it a natural brown color. It is commonly used for eco-friendly and rustic packaging.
