Christmas is the most awaited time of the year to exchange gifts. We love to give gifts on Christmas and love more when we receives gifts. It shows our love and compassion for our loved ones. But when this tradition started? It is widely believed that this tradition started when three wise men gave gifts to Jesus to celebrate his birth.

Three Gifts Given To Jesus By Wise Men

It may not be agreed on how many men there were or if they were kings but it is agreed that there were three gifts and each gift served a purpose.

  1. Frankincense –  was a perfume used in Jewish worship and, as a gift, it showed that people would worship Jesus.
  2. Gold – was associated with Kings and Christians believe that Jesus is the King of Kings.
  3. Myrrh – was a perfume that was put on dead bodies to make them smell nice and, as a gift, it showed that Jesus would suffer and die.

Banishment of Christmas Gifts

For centuries, gift-giving tradition lived with people giving out traditionally small, homemade gifts. But there was a time when some people were not fan of this tradition. The puritans who were fist settlers in north america, even outlawed Christmas and accompanying celebrations. This banishment started in around 1659 and lasted till 1681.

Saturnalia & Roman Empire

One other account on origin of Christmas associate it with Saturnalia a two day festival celebrated in roman empire and started on 17th december . It is believed that Christmas was first celebrated on 25th december was in the reign of Roman Emperor Constantine and getting officially declared few years later as the birth-date of Jesus by Pope Julius.
